HARMAN PHOTO PAPER APPLAUDED BY PHOTOGRAPHY GIANT
Internationally acclaimed photographer Jeff Dunas speaks out in praise of HARMAN PHOTO GLOSS FB AI
Since their introduction, HARMAN technology’s professional inkjet papers - which are sold under the brand name HARMAN PHOTO - have gained a large and loyal following across the world. The HARMAN PHOTO GLOSS FB Al in particular has been especially well received, winning acclaim from a number of famous photographers such as Britain’s Jonathon Glynn-Smith and America’s Richard Lohmann, who commended the paper for its ‘crisp tonal separation’, ‘deep rich blacks’ and ‘truly outstanding surface’. Recently, this list of famed users has grown with yet another renowned photographer emerging as an admirer of the product – Jeff Dunas.
A multi-award winning portrait, documentary and fine art photographer, Jeff has been a professional photographer for over 30 years. A founder and director of the American Palm Springs Photo Festival, his work is widely collected as well as exhibited at galleries internationally. His images have also formed the basis for a number of critically acclaimed books and have been published in such influential magazines as GQ, Life, Paris Match, Vibe, Esquire, The Face, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Der Spiegel and the British Journal of Photography.
For his latest exhibition, which forms part of the International Biennale of Photography running from the 12th June to the 14th September in Brescia, Italy, Jeff is using the HARMAN PHOTO GLOSS FB Al and he has nothing but praise for the high-end digital media.
He explains: “When I discovered the HARMAN PHOTO Gloss fibre base paper it was a real epiphany. It made me realise that this was the time to start shooting digital. Previously, I’d found it impossible to create a digital output that was in the same league as silver gelatine prints but the HARMAN PHOTO paper is comparable in every way. Its weight is glorious, its thickness, coupled with its use of special ‘anti-curl’ technology, means it stays flat whilst its surface even allows for spotting. It is just superb.”
The theme for this third Biennale is ‘Somewhere in the world’ with various international photographers exhibiting work depicting different countries in locations across Brescia - including galleries, museums and the city’s medieval castle.
Los Angeles born Jeff, who now splits his time living in that city and Paris, is exhibiting 10 colour and 20 black and white 20” by 30” prints - all produced on the HARMAN PHOTO GLOSS FB Al. These images come from his book ‘American Pictures’, a pictorial study which saw Jeff crisscrossing the United States from 1993 to 1999, shooting small towns, families and businesses that seemed frozen in the social optimism of 1950s and 60s America.
HARMAN is understandably proud that such a high-profile photographer is using its HARMAN PHOTO GLOSS FB Al product. The company’s Marketing Director and Chairman, Howard Hopwood, said: “HARMAN PHOTO may be a new brand from a relatively new name on the market, but HARMAN technology actually has a history in photo-imaging stretching back over a century. Up until 2005, the business was known as ILFORD, but we had to change its title following a management buy-out and so took the name of our original founder – Alfred Harman.
“Today, we still manufacture the same globally respected black and white photography products, which continue to be sold under the brand name ILFORD. However, we’ve now complemented them with the HARMAN PHOTO range of professional inkjet media. These new papers employ the same expertise and in-depth understanding of photographer’s needs as our analogue products. They even employ the same fibre base and baryta layer which extends tonal range, gives greater detail and definition and ensures excellent archival properties.”
“We are naturally delighted that Jeff is using the HARMAN PHOTO GLOSS FB AI and that the feedback from such an acclaimed photographer is so favourable. It goes some way to proving that our efforts to create a digital product that looks, feels and performs like a traditional darkroom paper have paid off.”

NOTES TO EDITORS –
HARMAN technology Limited is a pioneering imaging specialist based in Mobberley, Cheshire. The company - which was born of the ILFORD formed by Alfred Harman in 1879 - now includes three, separate and well known brands: ILFORD PHOTO which offers traditional monochrome photographic products; HARMAN PHOTO which provides high-end inkjet media for both colour and monochrome prints as well as display media such as HARMAN OPALJET; and the KENTMERE PHOTOGRAPHIC range of black and white film and paper.
The ILFORD range of inkjet products, including ‘ILFORD Galerie’, is not associated with HARMAN technology in any way, and is actually manufactured and marketed by a separate organisation based in Switzerland.
