HARMAN PHOTO MAKES BIG IMPACT IN THE BIG APPLE
Pioneering inkjet brand of HARMAN technology contributes to the success of New York Photo Festival

Having just drawn to a highly successful conclusion, New York Photo Festival looks set to be a new and regular addition to the US photography calendar. Staged for the first time ever in 2008 and designed to celebrate contemporary photography and the inspirational talents of the people behind it, the event attracted some of the biggest and best names in the business. This included HARMAN PHOTO, the globally respected inkjet brand of HARMAN technology Limited, which was represented thanks to its provision of paper to one of the exhibiting photographers – Jan Banning.

A photojournalist since 1981, Banning has published several books and received many awards both artistic and journalistic. This includes the World Press Photo 2004 Portrait Stories Award, the Prize of Prague 2004 and the Dutch Icodo Award 2003. He is also currently the Board Secretary of World Press Photo. His exhibition at New York Photo Festival featured images from an on-going project entitled ‘Bureaucratics’, which is a comparative photo and text study of the culture and symbols of state administration’s in 10 different countries.

To ensure Jan’s images looked their absolute best throughout the four day event which attracted tens of thousands of visitors, the festival’s internationally respected curators turned to New York based Gotham Imaging to provide the required prints. A digital fine art pigment print studio specializing in large format, museum quality printing, Gotham always uses the HARMAN PHOTO GLOSS FB Al paper for jobs of this nature. It approached HARMAN PHOTO, who in turn agreed to supply the paper as a show of support for the new event.

Peter Berberian from Gotham Imaging explains: “As you’d expect, Gotham has extensive experience with different digital media, but we’ve yet to find a paper that comes close to the HARMAN PHOTO GLOSS FB AI. Its performance in terms of image detail and definition, tonal range and vibrancy is amazing and blows everything else out of the water. The fact that HARMAN PHOTO was willing to supply this paper for Jan’s exhibition at New York Photo Festival also highlights that this is a company that takes it commitment to supporting the international photography community seriously.”

Perhaps even more importantly, the event’s organisers were just as delighted with the finished results. Sam Barzilay, New York Photo Festival’s Curatorial Coordinator, said: “I first encountered HARMAN papers at London's Host Gallery in 2007 and was instantly impressed by their quality. As a result, I was only too happy to use products from the same range at the inaugural New York Photo Festival. The finished prints on the HARMAN PHOTO GLOSS looked stunning and we hope to make even greater use of it in the production of future work.”

Meanwhile, Steven Brierley, HARMAN’s Sales Director for North America and Canada added: “New York Photo Festival is an important event as it celebrates photography in a city which is home to a large and influential community of commercial and fine art photographers. As such, HARMAN PHOTO was keen to be involved and to offer our support. If this year is anything to go by, we are sure it will go from strength to strength.”

NOTES TO EDITORS –

HARMAN technology Limited is a pioneering imaging specialist based in Mobberley, Cheshire. The company - which was born of the ILFORD formed by Alfred Harman in 1879 - now includes three, separate and well known brands: ILFORD PHOTO which manufactures traditional monochrome photographic products; HARMAN PHOTO which produces a range of high-end inkjet media for both colour and monochrome prints; and KENTMERE PHOTOGRAPHIC which produces a range of photography and inkjet papers, including Opaljet.

The ILFORD range of inkjet products, including ‘ILFORD Galerie’, is not associated with HARMAN technology in any way, and is actually manufactured and marketed by a separate organisation based in Switzerland.
