Glen Irven 1st Prize Winner Glen Irven LRPS,CPAGB image titled

Glen was born in 1967 in Sheerness in Kent and moved to Guernsey in 1980 when he was 13 years old. His late father was a wildlife artist and sculptor. Sadly, he never lived to see Glen’s success as a photographer, but Glen feels sure that he has inherited his father’s creativity, which manifests itself through his ability as a photographer.

For the last two years it has been a personal goal of Glen’s to win a photographic competition and this is the first time he has won outright.

The story behind the picture.

Glen tells the story behind the picture thus:

“I was in the UK for my grandmother’s funeral in February this year. My brother decided we should see where our mum and dad got married and had their reception. On passing this alleyway I told my brother that I needed to get my camera as I had spotted something. I dashed back to the car, grabbed the camera and went back to the spot I just seen. In my haste the camera wasn't playing ball. I tried a few more shots frantically trying to solve the problem.

When you get excited you forget all rational thinking or control!

I was running out of time fast, my brother said that he just had time to buy a CD and then we had to head off. Desperate to get the shot I was after, I knew that it would have to be something simple. I double-checked the camera’s basic setting and realised it was in AV mode at F22. So I set it in P, cranked the ISO to 200 as it was dark, and took the shot you see now.

It was one shot and time to go.

Lucky? Maybe. Thankful? You bet!

The original was in colour, but I found that it looked too man made, rather like a back drop of theatre set. So I converted it to black and white and felt it was better suited. I then added each poster picture in colour to bring out the subject matter in more detail. I found the HARMAN paper a real joy to use straight out the pack. The finish suited the image and my style perfectly”.

2nd Prize Winner –Al Lapkovsky – with ‘Muse is Dead’

2nd Prize Winner Al Lapkovsky image titled

Al Lapkovsky was born in Latvia and, after finishing a short two-month course at the Moscow School of Photography in 2002, has worked as a freelance assistant in London and Moscow. Currently based in the London, Al does not cite any particular photographer as an influence, but he does admire the work by Gibson, Bresson, Sciana, Mokhorev. He finds a variety of individual images inspirational rather than the work of a specific photographer.

Al has won many accolades for his work including: short-listed for Young Photographer of the Year, The Times, (UK 2003); short-listed for ”On the Wall”, British Journal of Photography, (UK 2004); The Royal Photographic Society 147th and 148th International Print Exhibitions (UK 2004 and 2005); SanDisk ”Go to Extremes” Digital Photo, Honourable Mention, US (2006); 5th place Photo Illustration, 4th Annual Photoworkshop Digital Imaging Competition (US 2006); overall winner ”Rare Character”, Smirnoff Black Competition (UK 2007).

Al has also featured in various magazines including: Digital Photographer, Soura Magazine, Photography Monthly, Black and White Magazine and the cover of the Sunday Times Magazine in 2005.

Al’s work can be viewed at his website: http://www.begemotfoto.com/

3rd Prize Winner – Geoff Hodgson, ARPS, LBIPP with ‘Crab Fishing’ and Commended with “Dead Tulips”

3rd Prize Winner Geoff Hodgson ARPS, LBIPP image titled

Working predominantly within the genre of landscape photography, Geoff explores the relationships between nature and the weather, utilising the land and the sky, woodland and forest, lakes, rivers and the sea. Recent explorations into landscape photography have led to several series incorporating a third dimension into his work, that of time. This has been achieved by using time-lapse photography techniques. Another aspect to Geoff’s photography is that of the British seaside resort, photographed in a contemporary style to depict the incongruous artefacts that remain to remind us of a long forgotten and abandoned ideal of what was once the Great British Seaside Resort.

The award-winning image ‘Crab Fishing’ was made from two separate exposures using an Olympus C8080W 8Mp digital SLR. These two images were separated in time by a few minutes; in that time lapse some of the people had moved their positions. By combining the two images in Photoshop and then cropping to the panoramic format, the final image was printed on Harman Technology Professional Photo Inkjet Matt FB, a beautiful heavyweight paper that reproduced the colours in this image to perfection.

Geoff is an Award Winning Professional Photographer, a National and International Exhibitor and has had his work published several times in The Best of Friends, Maile R, Creative Monochrome, Surrey. He recently took the first place in the BIPP/Towergate Fine Art Photography competition and currently has two images in the Royal Photographic Society 150th Annual Print Exhibition.
